CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The first big prize of the summer has been claimed at the Island Big Dig in Charlottetown.

Reg MacDonald of Blooming Point managed to dig up a token on July 26 that is worth $10,000 toward a purchase at Premier Island Homes.

“And, the irony in all of this is he is looking at building a home,’’ said Andrew Heggie, one of the organizers of the dig, which is a fundraiser for the Charlottetown Smashers’ ringette league. “He was certainly pretty excited about it.’’

Heggie said there are still 21 tokens buried under the ground, each of them worth $10,000 when redeemed at local businesses. In addition, there are hundreds of $100 gift cards that have been buried.

The grand prize, however, is a plastic container under the ground that contains $25,000 in cash.

The Island Big Dig takes place on Royalty Junction Road, which runs between Winsloe Road and Brackley Point Road.
